The future of the historic Lads of the Village pub remains uncertain as Stone Parish Council continues its efforts to secure its freehold. Earlier this year, the council successfully had the pub listed as an Asset of Community Value and on in August the council agreed to bid for the freehold, reinforcing its commitment to preserving this important part of Stone Parish’s heritage.

At a recent Council meeting, members received an update from the Parish Clerk regarding the ongoing dialogue with the freeholder’s agent. Despite making three formal bids to purchase the freehold and numerous attempts to negotiate a mutually agreeable position, the council has not yet received a meaningful response from the freeholder to support this outcome, with correspondence only highlighting the ‘significant’ interest that has been shown in the property.

With the expiry of the moratorium period looming in January, Jessica McQueen, Chair of Stone Parish Council, expressed concern over the lack of engagement, stating:
“The Lads of the Village is more than just a pub, it’s a cornerstone of our community and a vital part of our local history. We are deeply committed to safeguarding its future for generations to come. However, the lack of engagement by the freeholder is troubling and raises serious concerns about the potential fate of this important landmark.”

The council remains committed in its determination to secure the pub as a community-owned asset, ensuring it can continue to serve as a hub for social connection and community spirit. Stone Parish Council will explore all available avenues to protect and preserve this historic venue for the benefit of residents.
