Stone Parish Council is set to consider a significant decision regarding the future of the Lads of the Village public house. At an upcoming Special Council meeting on August 28, 2024, the council will discuss the possibility of purchasing the freehold of the pub, which has been a cornerstone of the Stone community since 1793.
The Lads of the Village, recently designated as an Asset of Community Value (ACV), has played a vital role in supporting social and recreation activity in the parish, hosted many resident’s life celebrations, and also raised thousands of pounds for charity. The designation acknowledges the pub’s historical importance and its essential contribution to community wellbeing. With the pub currently closed and listed for sale at a price of £375,000, the council recently resolved to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to be considered as a prospective bidder, triggering a six-month moratorium period in which the property cannot be sold unless to the council. The council has now convened a special meeting to consider negotiating the purchase of the freehold utilising a Public Works Loan to secure its future for continued community use.
“This upcoming decision is crucial for the future of the Lads of the Village,” said Jessica McQueen, Council Chair. “We understand the deep connection the community has with this historic pub, and have explored options for how best to preserve it as an ongoing community asset. This decision will establish the council’s position regarding ownership to support subsequent activity to raise the necessary funds for renovation works.”
Should the council resolve to move forward with negotiating a purchase, which may or may not be agreed by the current owner, the next steps would include seeking government and heritage grants to fund necessary renovations, which are estimated to cost between £350,000 and £400,000. The ownership of the property would significantly enhance the council’s ability to secure these funds and ensure the pub’s long-term viability.
The meeting, which is open to the public, will take place at 7pm on Wednesday 28th August 2024 at The Claire Tiltman Centre on Cotton Lane.
