Stone celebrated a significant milestone this week as residents gathered for the town’s first Annual Town Meeting since the transition from Parish Council to Town Council.

Opening the evening, the Mayor of Stone welcomed attendees and reflected on the importance of the occasion, describing it as “a new chapter” in the town’s history. Speaking at the newly improved Recreation Ground, the Mayor highlighted the transformation delivered through the Stone Recreation Ground Masterplan, creating a modern and inclusive community space, with final pavilion upgrades set for completion this summer.

The Mayor emphasised the growing role of Stone Town Council, particularly in light of upcoming local government changes, and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to supporting and representing residents. The evening also reinforced the importance of community involvement, with residents encouraged to engage in local decision-making and consider becoming councillors.

In the Annual Report, the Council outlined a year of major progress and transition. The formal move to Town Council status was described as both a reflection of Stone’s growth and a step towards stronger civic leadership. Key developments included the adoption of the Strategic Plan 2025–2028, which sets out priorities such as improving local facilities, expanding community programmes, delivering environmental initiatives, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Stone Community Champion Awards, recognising individuals who have made a meaningful difference to local life.

  • Keith Bridges was honoured for his voluntary work at the Stone pump track. Keith, a local resident and regular user of the Stone pump track, has freely given his time to support others. Keith gave a demonstration at our launch event on how to safely and effectively use the track and has provided informal coaching and encouragement on a regular basis to younger riders. Keith’s knowledge and passion has helped other users build confidence, develop their skills and enjoy the space safely and he has done all this voluntarily.

  • Jemma Burgess was recognised for her inspiring work as the founder of Hope on Prescription CIC, an organisation dedicated to improving wellbeing through poetry and creative expression. Jemma has created inclusive and supportive spaces where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together, share their stories, and connect through creativity. Her work has helped individuals build confidence, reduce isolation, and explore their emotions in a positive and constructive way. A major highlight of her contribution was the creation of the “Where the Light Begins” Festival, the first poetry festival of its kind in Dartford, held at Stone’s outdoor stage. The event showcased local talent and brought a unique cultural experience to the community. Through ongoing workshops and initiatives, Jemma continues to make a meaningful and lasting difference to the wellbeing of Stone residents.

  • Stephanie Thredgle was celebrated for her exceptional dedication to supporting older members of the community over nearly 15 years. As the organiser of the monthly Seniors of Stone sessions, Stephanie has created a welcoming and inclusive space for residents aged 55 and over to come together, socialise, and take part in a wide range of activities. Held on the last Friday of every month, these free sessions have become a cornerstone of community life for many attendees. Stephanie has gone above and beyond in organising engaging programmes, including guest speakers, seasonal celebrations such as summer barbecues and Christmas dinners, and charity raffles in support of causes like Cancer Research. Her commitment has helped foster not just regular events, but genuine friendships, support networks, and a strong sense of belonging among participants.

The next Seniors of Stone event will be on 26th June 2026. If you know anybody 55+ who would like to join in for free, get in touch.

The evening concluded with a special performance from Hope on Prescription, led by new Community Champion Jemma Burgess. Jemma thanked the Council for the honour and spoke about her experiences running the writing for wellbeing workshops and the opportunities it had afforded those who attended. One of the writers and regulars then performed one of her own pieces in a special performance about what Hope on Prescription meant to her, followed by a sneak peak of their upcoming Dartford’s Got Talent audition. The Mayor thanked Jemma and Ellie for their wonderful performance, urging anyone looking to express themselves creatively to attend one of Hope on Prescriptions workshops.

The Mayor closed the event by thanking residents for their continued support and participation, highlighting the strength of community spirit in Stone and the importance of working together to shape the town’s future.
